General context

Railway stations are usually considered from three perspectives: customer access to trains, business opportunities due to a high concentration of people every day, and interaction with the city and other transport modes.

Every two years, the nextstation conference gathers professionals, local authorities, researchers and other relevant stakeholders from around the world.

Last conference

Following the success of the first six events held in Rome, Paris, Brussels, Moscow, Marrakech and Madrid, the International Union of Railways (UIC), in close cooperation with Iranian Railways (RAI), organised the 7th UIC nextstation conference, which focused on “the railway station boosting the city”, in Tehran, Iran from 11 to 13 November 2019.

The purpose of this event was to understand how railway station can/should impact the city in a positive way. In order to make the most of all opportunities, the UIC scientific committee proposed that the panellists and speakers share their expertise and best practice through eight parallel sessions, namely:

  1. Station design (urban planning),
  2. Sustainability,
  3. Smart solutions for stations,
  4. Services & commercial activities,
  5. Station design (building approach),
  6. Mobility, accessibility & door-to-door solutions,
  7. Security & safety,
  8. Station management & financing.
