A.K. Mittal has been appointed Chairman of the Railway Board of Indian Railways. He succeeds Arunendra Kumar who superannuated on 31 December 2014 from railway services.
Prior to this appointment, Mr Mittal was Railway Board Member Staff and Ex-officio secretary to the Government of India. Earlier, he served as general manager of south western railway, headquartered in Hubli and was also looking after the additional charge of general manager, south central railway, headquartered in Secunderabad. Born on 7 July 1956, Mr Mittal has a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons.). An Officer of the 1976 batch of Indian Railways Service of Stores (IRSS), Mr Mittal has held various important posts within Indian Railways.
Indian Railways are currently part of the UIC Executive Board, the UIC Asia-Pacific Management Committee and the UIC Asia-Pacific Regional Assembly. Through the Rail Protection Force, Indian Railways also chair the UIC Security platform.
