RESTRAIL project was also presented at the International Railway Safety Conference (IRSC) 2013 held in Vancouver, Canada during the week of 6 – 11 October.
On Monday 7 October a panel was dedicated to suicide prevention. “Can societal collaboration prevent railway suicide?” described the Swedish RESTRAIL field test and also put RESTRAIL on the map with a description of the project, the participants, and the planned outcome. The presentation was delivered by Maria Hedqvist, Trafikverket, and Helena Rådbo, Karlstad University, both from Sweden.
Suicide is a problem that almost all railway operators face. The presentation generated significant interest from the audience, and questions were asked during the whole conference and not only directly in connection with the presentation itself. Researchers, practitioners and railway safety professionals showed great interest in knowing more about RESTRAIL and the results to come.
On Friday 11 October the RESTRAIL representatives also took part in a workshop about railway suicide that was held by Brian Mishara and Celine Bardot with the assistance of Transport Canada and ViaRail Canada. This was a good opportunity to share our knowledge and experience from the RESTRAIL project together with researchers, police representatives, social workers and railway safety professionals.
